Project Overview
Salford Cathedral, a Gothic Revival masterpiece completed in 1848, stands as the mother church of the Diocese of Salford and a pivotal landmark in Greater Manchester's cultural landscape. This ambitious multi-million-pound restoration, led by Purcell Architects in partnership with Simpsons of York, seeks to revive the cathedral's original splendour while establishing it as the UK's most sustainable place of worship. Phase two focuses on internal reordering, repairs, and redecoration, incorporating cutting-edge technologies like heat pumps, enhanced insulation, and protected stained-glass glazing to combat climate challenges.
Unique features include the restoration of lost 19th-century design elements, such as atmospheric mosaics and sacred spaces, alongside full accessibility upgrades. Set for completion by Easter 2026, the project will enhance capacity for a growing parish community and visitors, ensuring this historic site inspires future generations through blended heritage conservation and modern resilience.
