At ABM Tiling, a premier London tiling company based in Greater London, we're passionate about delivering top-tier commercial tiling services that blend tradition with modern expertise. Back in 2014, we had the honour of contributing to the ambitious restoration of All Saints Church in Kingston-upon-Thames—a site steeped in Britain's royal history. As trusted tiling subcontractors Greater London, we collaborated closely with Daedalus Conservation, the principal contractor, under the guidance of acclaimed architect Ptolemy Dean. This project, funded by the National Lottery, Viridor Credits, and generous local donations, aimed to preserve the church's legacy while making it a welcoming space for today's community.

All Saints Church stands as a timeless landmark in Kingston town centre, tracing its roots to a 10th-century Saxon structure where early English kings like Athelstan in 924 and Ethelred in 979 were crowned. The name "Kingston" itself echoes this regal past. Over centuries, the building evolved: Norman elements gave way to 14th-century rebuilds, with 15th-century additions like the chancel and chapels. Lightning strikes, reconstructions in the 1500s and 1700s, and Victorian updates in the 1850s and 1890s shaped its current form. By the 21st century, a major £3.5m overhaul was essential to integrate contemporary amenities without compromising its heritage.
Our role as restoration tiling experts focused on the floor tiling installation—a highlight of the project. We laid a brand-new handmade clay tile floor across key areas, employing authentic building methods with lime mortar bedding and grout for durability and historical accuracy. This approach not only respected the site's ancient foundations but also complemented the underfloor heating system installed for year-round comfort. Interestingly, as we worked, archaeologists uncovered human remains in adjacent sections, adding a layer of intrigue to the process and underscoring the church's deep historical layers.
The broader works, completed by September 2014, included reopening long-sealed entrances, refurbishing the choir vestry into an educational interpretation room, and enhancing the interior with redecorated ceilings, gilded angels along the nave, and intricate joinery. Essential repairs to the roof, including lead work and solar panels, ensured sustainability. New mechanical systems, toilets, kitchens, and a café at the east end turned the church into a seven-day-a-week hub, reconnecting the sacred with everyday life—just as in medieval times.

Shortlisted for the RICS London Awards 2015 in Building Conservation, this transformation highlights how professional tilers for projects like ours can partner with main contractors to deliver exceptional results. At ABM Tiling, we're proud to have been main contractor tiling partners on such a prestigious endeavour, showcasing our capability in heritage tiling restoration and clay tile flooring London.
